Chapter Sixteen
Any dream is attainable with the right people around you. Thatâs Auntie Maceyâs most recent quotable quote. I like it and the reason is simple. I went after my dream and got it. Or, more specifically, him.
Carson Hayes. I think heâs a dreamboat. Thatâs right. I know dreamboat is a word from the forties, at least according to my aunties, but in the case of Carson, my incredibly hot and sweet boyfriend, the word fits.
Itâs been a few weeks since my aunties and I had our discussion. I only eighty percent ignore what my aunties told me about my life. Itâs easy not to think about it when Iâm with my friends and especially my boyfriend.
At the moment Carson is sitting next to me in the noisy lunchroom of Hellgate high school caressing my knee. His pungent chicken and mashed potatoes is getting cold. I reach out to wipe an eyelash off his cheek and jump when a piece of crumpled paper hits Carson in the head. He catches it as it bounces off and squishes it tightly in his fist.
I glance around, searching for the culprit, as does Carson. Itâs one of his friends from the soccer team. His name is Ethan. He waves. âHey Rory.â
âEthan.â I wave back, grateful things mellowed a bit since Kelly and the other girls doused Carson in pigâs blood.
Carson chucks the paper back at him. âDude.â
Merida and Tiana sit across the table from Carson and me. Merida giggles. She gawks at Ethan. Itâs adorable how badly sheâs crushing on him.
âHey, I have to work until nine. Want to go to a party after?â Carson brushes some of my hair off my shoulder. His touch sends tingles along my skin.
âThereâs a party?â I lean in, pressing my forehead against his.
He kisses the tip of my nose and pulls me into a hug. âYep. Out at Beaver Lake.â
I close my eyes and take a deep breath, reveling in the scent of him. Of course I want to go with him to a party. Heck, Iâll go anywhere with him. Heâs a good guy and he cares about me. There isnât an ounce of doubt about that in my body. But since the talk with my aunties, theyâve put me on serious lockdown. Kind of. I can still do what I want, except at night.
My curfew used to be⦠whenever I wanted as long as I called. Now, itâs ten oâclock! Which is crazy during the week, but especially on the weekends. I try to be understanding. I know they want to protect me, and I want to be safe as well. But itâs been weeks and nothing happened.
I havenât mentioned my fairy heritage or the fact that my parents are the King and Queen of another realm, and that makes me a princess. How would I bring it up anyway. It all sounds too unreal, even to me.
âHey, Rory?â Merida pulls me out of my thoughts.
I sit up. âYeah?â I tear off a slice of orange and pop it in my mouth.
